CODE TO CERTIFIED
CPC first: diagnostic → protocol → train → practice → CPC final test → then unlock CPMA Auditing or CRC Risk Adjustment → plan & save

CPC first • Then CPMA auditing + CRC risk adjustment

Start with the diagnostic. Train where it counts.

One credential at a time. Step 1 is a 20-question CPC-only diagnostic across five skill areas. Your answers build a personal CPC protocol in Step 2 — the areas you miss get more lessons, more study videos, and more practice time. Pass the CPC final test in Step 5 (or mark your real CPC exam as passed in Step 7) and Step 6 unlocks two separate post-CPC tracks — Auditing for CPMA and Risk Adjustment for CRC — each with its own lessons, lab, practice, and readiness check. They are separate AAPC tests, so they carry no weight in your CPC diagnostic, protocol, practice, or final score.

Step 1 · The 20-question CPC diagnostic

Five CPC areas only: Foundations & Terminology · ICD-10-CM Guidelines · CPT & Modifiers · E/M Coding · HCPCS Level II. Auditing (CPMA) and Risk Adjustment (CRC) are separate tests and are not in this diagnostic — they live in the locked post-CPC tracks in Step 6. Answer all 20 — guessing is fine, a wrong answer just routes more CPC training to that area. Beginners typically score 5–9 / 20.

Credential map — one test at a time: CPC (AAPC) is the first finish line here: outpatient / professional-fee coding, 100 multiple-choice questions in 4 hours, 70% passes. CPMA (auditing) and CRC (risk adjustment) are separate AAPC credentials with separate exams — in this app they are post-CPC tracks in Step 6 and unlock only after you pass CPC. CCS (AHIMA) is an inpatient alternative first track — pick one first credential, don't study for two at once.

Step 2 · Your personal CPC training protocol

The full path behind your protocol

Your protocol reorders and reweights the three CPC phases — it doesn't skip any of them. Weak CPC areas move earlier and get a bigger share of your study time. Auditing and Risk Adjustment are not phases of CPC prep: they are separate post-CPC tracks, previewed below and opened in Step 6 after CPC.

CPC · Phase 1

Foundations

Terminology, anatomy by system, HIPAA & compliance basics, how a claim flows from encounter → code → payer → payment/denial.

CPC · Phase 2

Core coding for CPC

ICD-10-CM guidelines, CPT by section, HCPCS Level II, modifiers, E/M, surgery / radiology / medicine basics.

CPC · Phase 3

CPC exam readiness

Timed mocks, domain scores, error log, test-day strategy. Two full mocks at 75%+ before you schedule the real CPC exam.

Post-CPC · Locked 🔒

Auditing — CPMA track

Separate test, after CPC. Audit sampling, error classification, documentation-vs-code mismatch, OIG risk, provider feedback, defending a code. Full lessons, lab, and readiness check wait in Step 6.

Post-CPC · Locked 🔒

Risk adjustment — CRC track

Separate test, after CPC. CMS-HCC model, MEAT criteria, chronic-condition capture, RAF impact, suspect conditions, RADV audit risk. Full lessons, lab, and readiness check wait in Step 6.

Later · After a track

CDI, denials & data

CDI queries, denials & appeals, Epic / Oracle Health workflows, Excel + SQL for audit data. Detailed at the bottom of Step 6 — start it only after CPC, alongside or after a post-CPC track.

Step 3 · CPC Train — lessons & targeted study videos

CPC lessons only, grouped by CPC phase. Once you've taken the diagnostic, your focus areas move to the top and are badged, and the video shelf leads with the areas you need most. The CPMA and CRC lessons and videos are held in Step 6 — they unlock after CPC so they can't dilute your first finish line.

🎬 Study videos for your areas

YouTube tutorials matched to each skill area — every CPC area carries at least two videos, Exam Readiness included. Watch the ones for your focus areas first, then mark them watched. Tap a thumbnail to play the video right here. If the player ever shows a “video player configuration error” — some apps and browsers block embedded players — tap the gold Watch on YouTube ↗ button on that card instead: it opens the exact same video directly in YouTube, which always works. Always confirm code details against the current-year code books; videos are study aids, not guidelines.

Step 4 · CPC practice questions — with explanations

CPC-only set of 10 — no auditing or risk-adjustment questions, because those belong to the separate CPMA and CRC tests in Step 6. Your graded result breaks down by CPC area, so you can see whether your protocol focus areas are improving. Re-take anytime — your best score is kept in your progress file.

Step 6 · Post-CPC tracks — Auditing (CPMA) & Risk Adjustment (CRC)

Two separate credentials, two separate AAPC exams, two separate tracks. Neither is part of CPC prep: nothing here counts toward your CPC diagnostic, protocol, practice, or final score. Pick one track after CPC and work it on its own — its own lessons, its own lab, its own readiness check.

Post-CPC Track A · Separate test

🔍 Auditing — for the CPMA exam

For coders who want to review other coders' work: audit sampling, error classification, documentation-vs-code mismatch, OIG risk, provider feedback, and defending a code. Lessons and study videos for this track live only here, not in Step 3.

Audit Lab: Find the errors

Chart: Established patient, sore throat. Note documents a brief exam, strep test negative, viral pharyngitis impression, 12 minutes total time. Coded as: 99214 + J02.9 with modifier -25 and a separately billed E/M procedure that wasn't documented.

Pick every true audit finding:

Auditor's rule: If it isn't documented, it wasn't done — and time-based E/M must have total time on the date of encounter documented.

CPMA readiness check — 5 auditing questions

Drawn only from auditing questions. 4 / 5 or better means this track's core rules are sticking — the real CPMA is its own full exam, so treat this as a readiness signal, not a substitute. Best score: Not taken

Post-CPC Track B · Separate test

📈 Risk Adjustment — for the CRC exam

For coders who want to capture chronic-disease burden accurately: CMS-HCC model, MEAT criteria, RAF impact, suspect conditions, and RADV audit risk. Lessons and study videos for this track live only here, not in Step 3.

Risk Lab: MEAT check

For each condition, does the note support an HCC for this year? MEAT = Monitor, Evaluate, Assess/Address, Treat — at least one element, documented for that condition.

CaseSupports HCC?
Diabetes with CKD: “A1c 7.8, continue metformin, kidney labs reviewed, dose adjusted.”Yes — Evaluate + Treat, linked conditions.
COPD: Appears only on the past problem list. Not mentioned in today's visit at all.No — No MEAT this encounter. Do not code from problem list alone.
Heart failure: “HF stable, continue furosemide, weight & edema checked.”Yes — Monitor + Treat.
“Suspect” depression: Provider writes “possible depression, will monitor mood.” No assessment or treatment yet.No — Suspect conditions are not coded as confirmed in outpatient risk adjustment.

RADV reality: In a CMS Risk Adjustment Data Validation audit, unsupported HCCs are removed and payments can be extrapolated — that's why MEAT discipline matters more than hunting for more codes.

CRC readiness check — 5 risk-adjustment questions

Drawn only from risk-adjustment questions. 4 / 5 or better means this track's core rules are sticking — the real CRC is its own full exam, so treat this as a readiness signal, not a substitute. Best score: Not taken

Later, after a post-CPC track — CDI · Denials · Epic/Oracle · Excel + SQL

ModuleYou will learnPractice deliverable
CDICompliant, non-leading provider queries; specificity gaps (e.g., “pneumonia” → organism/type when clinically supported); query response tracking.Write 5 queries from vague notes without leading the provider.
DenialsDenial categories (CO/PR), reading an ERA/EOB & CARC/RARC codes, first-pass appeal letters with documentation attached.Work 10 denials: classify, fix vs. appeal, write the appeal.
Epic / Oracle HealthWhere coders actually work: workqueues, charge review, encoder integration, query in-baskets. Concepts transfer even though live system access requires an employer.Map a claim's journey in each system on paper; learn the 15 most common workqueue holds.
Excel for codersVLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, pivot tables, duplicate & missing-code checks on an audit sample.Clean a 500-row encounter extract and flag unsupported codes.
SQL for audit dataSELECT / WHERE / JOIN / GROUP BY — pull all encounters for a provider, code, or HCC in a date range.Write 8 queries, e.g. SELECT provider, COUNT(*) FROM encounters WHERE code='E11.22' GROUP BY provider;

Sequencing note: Don't start this later material until you have passed CPC and are working a post-CPC track. Tools amplify coding judgment — they don't replace it.

Step 5 · CPC final practice test — exam conditions

This is the CPC completion step, taken when your CPC training is done — separate from the 20-question diagnostic in Step 1 and the 10-question practice set in Step 4. The real AAPC CPC exam is 100 questions in 4 hours (70% to pass). This final test runs at the same pace — 2.4 minutes per question: 60 questions, 144 minutes on the clock, and the same 70% pass line (42 / 60). The 60 are drawn fresh each attempt from the CPC portion of the question bank, keeping a CPC-only area mix every time (Foundations 11 · ICD-10-CM 17 · CPT & Modifiers 14 · E/M 11 · HCPCS 7) with a strong share of case-style chart-scenario questions. No CPMA auditing or CRC risk-adjustment questions appear here — those are separate tests with their own readiness checks in Step 6. The draw is weighted against repeats: every question the app has already shown you is less likely to be picked again — weighted 1 ÷ (1 + times shown) — so fresh questions surface first, but a repeat is never impossible and can still appear, just like re-studying a familiar chart. Your per-question shown counts are kept in your progress file. When time runs out, the test grades itself. After grading you get explanations for every question, a per-area breakdown, and a personal study guide built from exactly what you missed. Passing this test (42 / 60 or better) unlocks the post-CPC tracks in Step 6.

How to read your result: 42 / 60 (70%) or better = pass pace for the real thing — but only book the CPC after you can pass this test twice with time to spare. A pass here also unlocks Step 6: the separate CPMA Auditing and CRC Risk Adjustment tracks. Below 70%, don't re-sit immediately: work the study guide generated under your score — it groups everything you missed by area and topic, states the rule to relearn, and ends with what to restudy first, what to practice, and when to retake.

Step 7 · Study plan, job readiness & save

Already passed the real CPC exam?

The post-CPC tracks in Step 6 unlock in either of two ways: pass this app's CPC final test (42 / 60), or tell the app you have already passed the real AAPC CPC exam. Use the button only if you really hold the credential — it is saved in your progress like everything else.

Not marked as passed yet.

Build your CPC study plan

If you've taken the diagnostic, your plan's weekly time is split using your protocol's area weights — focus areas get the bigger share.

Job-readiness checklist (after certification)

  • Resume leads with credential + any chart experience (externship, practicum, volunteer coding counts — label it honestly).
  • Remove the “A” (Apprentice) from CPC where applicable: AAPC requires education/experience criteria — check current AAPC rules before applying.
  • Target titles beyond “Coder I” that fit a new CPC: coding QA assistant, denial coder, CDI assistant. HCC coder and coding auditor roles normally expect the CRC or CPMA on top of CPC — that's what the Step 6 tracks prepare you for.
  • Keep an error log from every mock — interviewers ask how you handle audits; this is your answer.
  • Plan credential #2 within 24 months, as its own test: pick one post-CPC track in Step 6 — CPMA (auditing) or CRC (risk adjustment) — and finish that before starting the other.

Sources to verify before you pay for anything: AAPC CPC page · AHIMA CCS page · CMS (confirm current exam fees, format, and HCC model year on the official pages — they change).
